Will Be Careful

Everyone we meet thinks that Will's name is short for William, which its not. In reality, if it were short for anything it would be short for Will Be Careful! I am pretty sure that I call him "Will Be Careful" more than any other nicknames combined (and that is saying something because he's known as anything from Wildebeest to Willamunga to Gump, with a whole lot in between). Most people make fun of me for constantly telling him to be careful, but seriously, the man is nuts. (While rereading this post to make sure it makes sense I had to say "Will Be Careful" four times as he tried to climb onto the entertainment center and when he decided to use his hammer on the glass door. He is currently attempting to climb onto the computer tower to get a leg up onto our fax machine).

Will is absolutely not even remotely afraid of anything that could actually hurt him, so his lack of fear gives me nightmares. Meaning, he will do just about anything and I sit back and watch trying not to wet my pants (or more often I run to stop him praying I get there before he breaks his neck). He will climb the tallest slide, and scale the top of a rock wall for kids twice his age (OK, that is only 4... so let's say kids three times his age). When given a Cozy Coupe, he wasn't content to ride in it, he had to climb to the top and perch on it. It was all fun and games until he tried to stand and surf on it like the van scene in Teen Wolf.I would like to think that this is a sign of bravery and strong personality, but really I am not so sure. He is terrified of loud noises and recently had a major meltdown about going on a hay rack ride. The 18 month old next to me bravely held on while Will the Wimp cried and screamed "done". So, I am not sure if I can call him brave or if its really just stupidity on his part. Then again, when he was 6 months old he did a belly flop off the kitchen counter (some would claim that is my fault), so maybe his theory is that if he survives that, he can make it through anything!!!

i can relate to your no fear son! my son is 6 and about 2 months ago he had 4 teeth knocked out at school - he collided with another boy. luckily they were his top 4 teeth and were all baby teeth. the VERY next day - with a fat lip and huge gaps and all of those things - he was "pracitcing the high jump" for the olympics - running and jumping up and down the hall and off the bed etc. i just waned him to SIT DOWN and do NOTHING! lol! he wasnt bothered at all by his injurys! boys eh!

Fireball - Sounds like your screen name fits your son!!! I was hoping that the death defying feats stopped at a young age... you dashed my hopes. Good luck to both of us!!!

van scene from teen wolf... that cracked me up.

i'm still having flashbacks from the weekend of will hitting me with the firetruck ladder, "heh heh heh, sorry uncle mike!"

Few people would appreciate the Teen Wolf reference, but I thought you might.

And, he's asked for you several times today... with no ladder in hand. So you may be safe at Thanksgiving.

Does Will know what "be careful" means? I have a feeling he hears "Will, then a long string of the adult voice from Peanuts." I got the Teen Wolf comment too. Cute

Laura - are the words "be careful" too mature for his vocabulary like my set of House Rules, or do you think he just tunes out everything I say???

To know Will, is to love Will. All of you who know him can see why I would say this, and I say this with the outmost love for my godson...he is a head nod away from Rain Man.

But its an important head nod, Homa!

Hi, I am new to your blog, I LOVE it!! I had to tell you that I have a brother named "Howard" and when we were younger, the kid next door asked his mother if he could go over to "Howard do you hear me's house"? All my mother said for the first 12 years of that boy's life were, "Howard, do you hear me?" It reminded me of "Will be careful" - it might stick.

Jules - Welcome and thanks for reading! I am going to laugh if someday someone thinks his name really is "Will Be Careful." Although, it wouldn't surprise me if he currently thinks that's his name!
